Research
Testing Locations
A variety of locations are available to the Consortium for research testing. Locations include the following areas.
- Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility (BGNDRF); Alamogordo, NM
- Permian Basin; Southeast New Mexico
- San Juan Basin; Northwest New Mexico
Final Project Reports
Pilot-scale treatment systems were constructed and tested in the San Juan and Permian Basins by industry partners with support from the NMPWRC. The reports below summarize the entire research effort, including the objectives, methods, data, results, and conclusions. Each report provides a detailed look at the science and technology behind produced water treatment and reuse. In conjunction with the peer-reviewed publications, they offer a transparent record of the findings that inform policy, guide innovation, and support safe water management in New Mexico.
Scientific Integrity
The Consortium maintains independent scientific integrity through a governance structure that separates research execution, operational management, and advisory input as outlined in the 2026 Operating Plan. Research activities are led by the Research Director, with multidisciplinary Working Groups providing diverse technical input while avoiding conflicts of interest through required recusals. NMED and NMSU share research data, progress updates, and draft results with Consortium Members for transparent review and discussion. The Government Advisory Board offers additional interagency insight to ensure scientific rigor and policy relevance. Final research results are approved by Consortium leadership and then publicly released in accordance with the Membership Agreement and applicable law.
